Oats β-glucan

Oats β-glucan

Beta-glucans are present in yeast cell walls, mushrooms, grains, and have immune enhancements. It is also a water-soluble dietary fiber that binds to cholesterol and triglycerides in the small intestine, inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol and triglycerides and promoting excretion. As a result, it helps prevent heart disease because it lowers blood cholesterol levels in the body, inhibits fat build-up, and also lowers blood cholesterol.

Beta-glucan is mainly found in oats, barley, shiitake, and oyster mushrooms, among which oats were selected as Time magazine's top 10 superfoods.

Why oat?

In the oat ◎ Oats rich in soluble fiber 'beta-glucan' have effects to lower cholesterol and to inhibit blood sugar rise - Prevent hyperlipidemia, diabetes and cardiovascular disease that threaten blood vessels
◎ It is rich in vitamins, lysine, tryptophan, calcium, iron, magnesium, copper and zinc, and contains a much more concentrated form of protein than other grains. It also contains protein in a much more concentrated form than the protein it contains.

◎ Top 10 Healthy Foods in the World by the New York Times (Tomato, spinach, red wine, nuts, broccoli, salmon, garlic, teas, blueberries, oats)
  • High-protein, low-calorie
  • Removal of reactive oxygen species
  • Rich in citrate-soluble fibrotic
Oats β-glucanExperimental and Evaluation data
1. Practical use of functional foods to improve hypercholesterolemia
▶Research purpose
  • Beta-glucan is a material with various functions such as immune enhancement and anti-inflammation, Its functionality has been secured worldwide and it has been widely used. Recently, beta-glucan immune function improvement function has been verified, and the possibility of development is increasing, such as receiving individual recognition of functionality from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
  • Therefore, beta-glucan high-content powder is manufactured from oats to study the production of water-soluble features.
  • It is a material that have the effectiveness of blood sugar and cholesterol reduction, and it is intended to have all data (a treatise on verification of efficacy and mechanism of action) to apply for clinical human trial.
▶Research result
  • Publish two treatises from the Korean Food Science Department and one from the Korean Food and Nutrition Society.
  • Three commendations from the government department(Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning commendations and two other cases)
  • Two Technical transfers(The manufacturing method of wheat germ extraction indicating antibacterial effect and the 1 other case)
  • Two patent applications (The composition containing oat-derived soluble beta-glucans as effective ingredients) Photo. Poster presentation material.
2. Establishment of oat B-glucan validation criteria and technique
▶Research purpose
  • Establishment of two or more types of surface material analysis methods by HPLC and biochemical methods
▶Research result
  • Completion of certification of test and inspection report by the Korea Institute of Functional Food.
  • 33.9% beta-glucan content checked at 339.9 mg/g.
3. Evaluation of enzymatic low-efficiency and pharmacodynamics
▶Research purpose
  • Weight change, dietary intake, organ and fat tissue weight, plasma lipid density, and HMG-CoA comparison in hepatic tissue for general animals (Wistar rat), general animals (4 weeks old)
▶Research result
  • Different controls and experimental groups for changes in after a meal blood sugar levels after giving sucrose.
  • After injecting Starch, there is a difference of blood sugar 30 minutes after meals between the control and experimental groups.
  • After injecting Starch, Experimental group appears AUCt, Cmax lower compared to control group
4. Effect assessment – long-term animal testing
▶Research purpose
  • Comparison of fat size changess in common animals (C57BL/6) with self-eating oat beta glucan for 10 Weeks
▶Research result
  • As a result consistent with the inhibition of blood sugar estimation in the n-vitro test, we can find out the decrease in blood sugar caused weight loss through the overall calorie restriction.
  • Prove to control the after a meal blood sugar level regulation by inhibiting enzyme activity, which means long-term giving a dose of oat beta-glucan will allow blood sugar level control and lower blood glucose levels, reducing fat metabolism and cholesterol levels.
5. Approval and patent application for the Human Imaging Experiment (IRB)
▶Research purpose
  • A study on the effectiveness of oat B-glucan intake in human organism to decrease blood cholesterol concentration
▶Research result
  • Complete approval of the Human Imaging Experiment (IRB)
  • Obesity, dyslipidemia, or fatty acid containing beta-glucan oligoxide as an effective ingredient (Patent No 10-2016-014336)
  • Components containing oat-derived soluble beta-glucan as effective ingredients (Patent No: 10-2017-0145559)

Determination of the effectiveness of oat-derived soluble beta-glucans on calorie restriction in Vivo animal models

The intake of beta-glucan can properly regulate the blood flow of sucrose and starch, which are major human intake carbohydrates, thereby limiting the number of calories entering the body through continuous calorie restriction, this mechanism of blocking the inflow of carbohydrates is considered to be an action mechanism that shows the possibility of inducing cholesterol and weight loss as a result. It is necessary to verify the weight and cholesterol control effect of beta-glucan through later human clinical trials, If these mechanisms of action are properly applied, beta-glucan inhibits the digestion of post-dinner carbohydrates, allowing blood sugar control and calorie restriction, which are considered to be effective for weight and cholesterol control in the long run.
